AI Answers Are Confusing You With Another Business: What to Do About It

We hit this one ourselves. When we asked AI tools about L17 AI, some answers mixed us up with businesses that have similar names. If ChatGPT or Google AI describes someone else when customers ask about you, here is why it happens and what helps.

Why it happens

AI tools build answers by pulling together what they can find. Short names, names close to other companies, thin information about your business and inconsistent spellings (for example "L17", "L-17" and "L17 AI") all make it easier for an answer to blend you with someone else.

1. Use one exact name everywhere

Pick the full name and use it the same way in your page titles, the og:site_name tag, logo alt text, footer, email signature and every social profile. We now spell out "L17 AI" in all of those places.

2. Say what you are, right next to your name

Pair your name with a plain description: what you do, who for and where. "L17 AI helps small businesses get found by AI search" is much harder to confuse than a name on its own.

3. Add Organization schema

Structured data tells search engines and AI tools exactly who you are. Include your name, any alternateName spellings, url, logo, a description, and sameAs links to the social profiles that really are yours.

4. Make your profiles match

Your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and directory listings should all use the same name, website and description. Every match makes the link between them stronger.

5. Publish a real About page

Name the founder, tell the story and link to your active profiles. It gives AI tools a clear page that describes your business in your own words.

6. Add an llms.txt file

An llms.txt file is a short plain-text summary of your business for AI tools, placed at your domain followed by /llms.txt. It is an emerging convention and not every AI tool reads it yet, but it is quick to add and states who you are without ambiguity.

7. Report wrong answers

ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews all let you give feedback on an answer. Use it when you see a mix-up.

8. Recheck every month

Changes take time to show up as AI tools revisit your site. Ask the same questions each month and note what changes.
